The construction of the new international airport in Kastelli, Crete, has now reached approximately 70% completion. The latest update confirms that several of the most important infrastructure works have already been completed, while the project is gradually moving toward its final construction phase.
The new airport will eventually replace the current Heraklion Airport and is expected to become one of the most important infrastructure projects for tourism, transport and economic development on Crete.
One of the biggest milestones is the completion of the runway, taxiway and aircraft parking apron. These are the core airside areas of the airport and form the basis for future operational testing.
The completion of these areas shows that the airport is moving beyond the early construction phase and closer to the stage where technical systems, terminal works and operational procedures become increasingly important.
Construction of the main passenger terminal is also progressing rapidly. The terminal will be the central building for passenger handling, check-in, arrivals, departures and airport services.
Work is also continuing on the control tower and airport fire station, while the police facilities were among the first buildings at the airport site to be completed.
According to current estimates, test flights could potentially take place during 2026 if construction continues at the current pace. These test flights would not mean the airport is open to passengers yet, but they would be an important step toward operational readiness.
The wider testing and preparation phase is expected to continue before the airport’s planned opening in 2028.
The new road connection between Hersonissos and Kastelli Airport remains a critical part of the project. Without smooth road access, the airport cannot function efficiently for passengers, workers, hotels, car rental companies and transport operators.
A key part of this road project is the large double tunnel in the Xerokamares – Agnos area. Construction progress on the tunnel has now exceeded 30%, although some delay risk remains because the tunnel works started later than other sections.
The tunnel project consists of two separate tunnel sections of approximately 3 kilometers each. Large parts of the remaining road connection between the north coast and the airport area have already been completed.

Greek Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis visited the Kastelli Airport construction site on May 13, 2026. During the visit, he described the new airport as a major upgrade for Heraklion and Crete.
He stated that Crete is “moving up a category” with the construction of the new airport and expressed hope that the project will be ready around mid-2028.
The new Kastelli International Airport is expected to significantly change the way visitors arrive on Crete. Compared with the current Heraklion Airport, the new airport should offer more capacity, more modern facilities and a smoother arrival experience.
For tourism, transport, car rental, hotels and local businesses, the project will be one of the most important changes on the island in the coming years.
With construction now reported at around 70% completion, the project is clearly moving into a more advanced phase. The next important milestones will be the continued development of the terminal, technical systems, road access, tunnel works and future operational testing.
