New Highway and Airport Signage Show Rapid Progress at Kastelli Airport

New road signs, completed junctions and highway works reveal how the future access route to Crete’s new international airport is taking shape.

The road infrastructure surrounding the new Kastelli Airport continues to move forward at an impressive pace. During a recent visit to the construction area, we observed several visible signs that the airport project is steadily progressing beyond the terminal and runway works.

One of the most notable developments is the appearance of new airport road signage, directing traffic towards Kastelli Airport and Hersonissos. These signs provide a first glimpse of how future visitors will navigate to and from Crete's newest international airport.

First Airport Direction Signs Installed

For the first time, official road signs featuring an airport symbol can now be seen along the new road network. While the airport itself is still under construction, these signs demonstrate that the surrounding infrastructure is rapidly taking shape.

The installation of directional signage is an important milestone for any major transport project, as it marks the transition from pure construction works towards operational preparation.

New Highway Towards Hersonissos

Large sections of the new highway connecting Kastelli Airport with the northern coast are already paved and equipped with lighting and safety barriers. Although the road is not yet open to public traffic, the route can already be driven through construction access points.

The new highway towards Hersonissos is already paved in several sections, although not yet open to the public.

The future connection will significantly reduce travel times between the airport and the major tourist areas around Hersonissos and the north coast of Crete.

Roundabout Completed Near Airport Access Route

Another visible sign of progress is the completion of a new roundabout that forms part of the future airport access network. Road markings, lighting and safety barriers have already been installed.

A new roundabout has been completed as part of the future access road network around Kastelli Airport.

In a few years, thousands of arriving and departing passengers are expected to pass through this junction every day. Today it remains a quiet construction area, but it already provides a glimpse of the future transport network serving Crete's largest airport project.

Kastelli Airport Progress Continues

With terminal construction advancing, the twin highway tunnels nearing completion and the surrounding road infrastructure steadily expanding, Kastelli Airport is becoming increasingly visible across the landscape of central Crete.

We will continue to publish regular construction updates, photographs and news as the project moves towards its planned opening in 2028.
