As American tourism to Greece continues to grow, Crete may become an even more attractive destination once the new Kastelli International Airport opens.
As travel between the United States and Greece continues to grow, many visitors are beginning to ask an important question: could Crete eventually receive direct flights from the United States?
At the moment, no airlines have announced direct flights between the United States and Crete. However, the opening of the new Kastelli International Airport could create opportunities that do not exist with the current Heraklion Airport.
The United States has become one of Greece’s most valuable tourism markets. In summer 2026, Athens is connected with more than one hundred weekly flights to major American cities, including New York, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Washington, Charlotte and Dallas.
Many American visitors continue their journey to the Greek islands, with Crete attracting travellers interested in history, gastronomy, beaches, archaeological sites and luxury tourism.
Today, most American visitors reach Crete by connecting through Athens before flying onward to Heraklion or Chania.
The new Kastelli International Airport is expected to offer significantly more passenger capacity than the current Heraklion Airport, together with modern facilities and improved airport infrastructure.
These improvements could make Crete more attractive for future long-haul operations if airlines see enough demand from the American market.
For now, Athens remains the main gateway for American visitors travelling to Crete.
Whether airlines eventually launch nonstop services to Crete will depend on passenger demand, airline network planning, aircraft availability, airport readiness and the commercial performance of Greece as a long-haul destination.
As Kastelli Airport moves closer to completion, it is expected to strengthen Crete’s international connectivity and support future tourism growth.
Although direct flights from the United States remain a possibility rather than a confirmed plan, the combination of increasing American tourism and a modern international airport makes the idea more realistic than ever before.
The coming years will show how airlines respond once Kastelli Airport becomes fully operational.
